 INTRODUCTION:
Ideas, thoughts and information can be shared through various means.  It could be text based, or through audio, visual medium.  This information is useful in different ways.  By manipulating the text, audio and visuals.  We can obtain effective communication multimedia in the tool for integrating text, audio, video into a communication media, i.e. by representing these tools in effective manner, we can communicate with other peoples.
Multimedia files, applications in diverse fields such as education and research, video conferencing, marketing, entertainment, the Internet, the virtual reality, business presentation etc.
Multimedia is a technology including or involving the user several types of media such as text, pictures, audio, video, and animation but all these are in digital format.  So that multimedia is a technology, which is used as mechanically.
At present almost multimedia is reached into every field, i.e. depending upon the necessaries different fields use multimedia in different ways.  Some examples are business, television, news, education, advertising etc, using multimedia according to their needs.

NEEDS OF MULTIMEDIA:

The main need of multimedia is to obtain effective communication.  Different kind of fields uses this multimedia in different ways.  For example the advertisement field produce different advertisements by using different multimedia tools to attract the people.  Some times they add animation, morphing in advertisements.
In industry side, the multimedia is used for various purposes.  Each department in industry use multimedia application to show their current status to the company owners.  By using multimedia we can represent information in seminars, effectively.
Computer graphics systems also need of multimedia to make graphics perfectly.  In movie industry at present, they are using multimedia application to make movies effectively.

MULTIMEDIA ELEMENTS AND TOOLS:

There are basically 4 elements are need in multimedia.
                1. Texts
                2. Pictures
                3. Audio
                4. Video
By using these elements we can create many kinds of visualization.
For example, the ordinary text can be changed to graphical text.  Then we use this graphic text in 2D or 3D animation.  Power point is an example of text animator.  By using these elements we can represent information in a understandable manner in different ways.
1.TEXT:
Computers have always conveyed information through text.  Text is one of the most widely used and one of the oldest forms of communication text is effectively used by multimedia application to provide information, provide help, help the user navigate through the application and provide overall interactivity to the application.
In a multimedia application, text should be used intelligently to convey the desired meanings effectively.  For example, 'quit' sounds are more powerful than 'close'.  "Brilliant!" may be used instead of "the answer was correct".  Of course the usage of text depends on the nature of the application.
By using multimedia software MS-WORD, ADOBE we can create different types of text.  We can show light effects and 3D effects on the text by using multimedia soft wares. We can also animate this formatted text.  For example, power point is software to animate the text.  Each software has different kinds of fonts available.  These are used to change our text, as we require.
HYPER TEXT:
Hyper text is the link to another page of information when the user click on these hypertext we can see the page of information.  Some times pictures also used as hyper links to another location.
Therefore by using hypertext, we can represent whole information in a brief manner.  This concept is used in web designing and documentation processing.
HYPER MEDIA:
Hypermedia is link between different kinds of media elements such as graphics, audio, and video.  Through hypermedia, related data from such sources as optical disks, telephones, televisions, and electronic mail can all be linked making it possible to move among the various media by choosing the appropriate option.
The basic concept behind hypertext and hypermedia are the same.  The main difference being that in a latter, links are used to connect all kinds of information, not only text.
The two common expressions used in hypermedia are 'link' and 'node'.  Links are connection between conceptual elements or nodes.  i.e. the nodes containing text, graphics, sounds, or related information in the knowledge base.  The important thing to be taken care of while designing the links and their nodes so that they make sense.
These hypertext and hypermedia are very useful to find information in Internet using search Engines.  Whenever we want to find information about any particular things or object we have to entered keywords into the search engine.  Whenever we click on search to get the information it will automatically search the hyperlinks of the corresponding keywords in Internet and it displays their hyperlinks information.
2.PICTURES:
Sometimes pictures are more useful that text to represent information with effective and efficient manner.  For example, to illustrative and area of weather report it is easy to represent graphically than textually.  By using multimedia software photo shop, power point, paint we can create different pictures according to our needs.
3.AUDIO:
Audio technology is added beauty to multimedia application.  By using audio technology we can communicate with other people.  We can hear the sounds or use sounds in applications.
The audio multimedia software is very useful in recording the sounds and recording the speeches.  After recording all these things we can use different ways.
Ex: Voice email is the best example of multimedia application.
In voice email there is no need to read the message, it will automatically read the message.

4.VIDEO:
By combining text, audio with video technology we can represent information more understandable.  By using video technologies the user can know the information directly by seeing video.

ANIMATION:

Animation is entirely different from video, because video is the continuous stream of film images but animation use drawn illustration.  Animation is the process of creating and displaying images, which appears to have motion or dimension or both.  Applying animation to graphics increase the interest of the viewer makes the graphics more realistic and exciting.  Animation adds impact to multimedia projects and in widely used in multimedia application to make them more attractive.
Animation works on the principle that if a series of pictures are displayed one by one at a certain speed, they create an illusion of movement.

There are two main areas of computer animation:
                                    2D (Two Dimensional)
                        3D (Three Dimensional)

2D ANIMATION:
2D animation uses traditional techniques such as 'cel' animation.  It also uses methods like 'tweening'.
Disney derives the term ‘cel’ from the clear celluloid sheets that were used to draw each frame in the cartoon movies made.  However, nowadays-plastic sheets are used for the purpose.  Cel animation network begins with 'key frames' (the first and last frame of the action).
The series of frames in between the key frames are drawn in a process called 'tweening'.  Tweening an action requires calculating the number of frames between key frames and the path the action takes.  As tweening progresses, the action sequence are checked by flipping through the frames and colors are applied to the frames.
3D ANIMATION:
3D Animation is more complex.  Examples of simple 3D graphics are text animation in which the text has depth, width and height.  The basic principle of creating a 3D animation is to first create an object in the dimensions of space, give it a geometric wire frames and covers it with colors and textures, place lights and cameras and render it to see the final output.  This process and the concepts involved in creating a 3D animation are explained below.
1.  A shape is created.  A process used by 3D software is                     LOFTING, it is used to change a 2D object to 3D one.
            Ex: Flat circle to cylinder.
2.  It is given a geometric wire frames (These wire frames are also called meshes)
3.  Another concept used while creating 3D animated object is inverse kinematics.  This is used to link related movements.
Ex: When a man moves his hands, his figures, wrist, arm, and shoulder move accordingly.
            4.  Then object is applied color and texture (plastic surface).
5.      The lights are placed at the desired location to get an effect of light falling on the object.
6.        After all this is done, key frames are set to trace the movement of the object. Key frames are the first and last frames of the action.  The number of frames can be set.  Key framing technique allows the animator to choose the specific start and end frames.  The computer creates the motion based on the start point, end point and the number of frames.
7.
.  Finally this is rendered to get the final output.  Rendering is the    process of                 finally getting the output of the animated object, rendering can be compared to                compiling.

MORPHING:
Morphing is also related to animation.  It is a technique that allows smooth changes to occur to an object's shape by defining beginning, end, and possibly intermediate forms as guides or targets.  Morphs can change just about any form into another, but they also can be used to animate organic forms realistically, such as snake's slithering motion or a sneezing man's facial contortions.
Some of the software that provides animation tools are Animator Pro, Animation Master, 3D Studio MAX, Ray Dream Studio etc.

MULTIMEDIA-WEB DESIGN:-

Multimedia is very powerful tool to design web pages today.  Every owner of the web page creates their WebPages in a attractive manner to attract the users.  He gives many facilities like e-mail, downloads, chat etc.  These are provided to attract the people. When the web is at initial stage we have only little website which are providing all kinds of facilities at free of cost. But at right now there are a lot of sites giving free services to the people.  So to attract the people to visit their sites the owner of the sites are developing their homepages more attractively. To develop an interesting and attractive web page the web designer use various multimedia applications like image, text, audio and video tools. By developing WebPages with hyperlinks it is easy to search to information in the web through Search Engines.  The search engine search searches all the sited for information about given keywords.  By adding images to the WebPages we can download or copy them to our systems.

We can hear music through web pages, by clicking on the song.  To hear this we are avail lot of audio soft wares are developed.  For example the real player is one of the audio software, which is used to hear the song in Internet. Similary we can view movies, clips and animation in Internet and hear sounds using the media player software.  Some WebPages are opened with playing sound automatically.  For example tirumala.org was designed in the same.  When the user enters in to tirumal.org then he automatically hear the slogan of Lord Venkateswara.  This will attract the user.  Some websites gives virtual walk into WebPages.  That is by opening some WebPages we can feel that we are seeing directly the objects or places. For example whenever we open pentium3.com we can see Tajmahal just like seeing directly.  That is the Designer makes some slow movement into the Tajmahal continuously.  Some WebPages are provided facility of void main and void chatting, by using these facilities the user can chat to other people with voice and they can read the mails. At present we can make phone call through Internet among the world.
In this way the multimedia is useful in developing WebPages with more facilities.

APPLICATIONS OF MULTIMEDIA: -

Multimedia is almost useful in all fields.  We will discuss some areas in which multimedia is useful.

1.BUSINESS
Multimedia is used in business to enhance quality of business communication.  Now we see advertisements and corporate presentation incorporating multimedia video conferencing, another activity that involves multimedia allows people to get together for discussions on the internet.

2.MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT
Media and entertainment industry are major benefactors of multimedia technology.  Graphic effects, animation and sound are widely used in producing animation movies.  The ability to manipulate sounds, through techniques like mixing, provides ability to change the existing sound track by mixing with another sound retrace.  This technique is widely used by musician’s toy produce exotic sound effects.
Entertainment CD's containing games, comics, and stories for children are widely available which can be used for the twin purpose of entertainment and education.  These CD's make use of all the components of multimedia.
One popular technique, transition morphing is used widely now a days.  It is the process of creating an illusion of one image melting into another while warping the two images so that they appear to be merging into one another.  This technique is used to create special effects is moves, ad-films etc.  One popular morphing software is elastic reality.

3.MARKETING WITH MULTIMEDIA
Multimedia finds application in highly diversified areas like marketing, which includes sales promotion, direct sales and customer ser ices.  Multimedia brochures and multimedia catalogues are used for sales promotion.  Merchandising systems are being used ads point-of-sales information systems or direct sales.
Specific multimedia applications in sales and marketing take on a variety of formats.
These include electronic brochures, electronic catalogues, and special medical and pharmaceutical promotions.
Electronic brochures consist of a CD or diskettes with highly interactive program using still images, graphics, sound, text and data.  As co pared to direct mail brochures, electronic brochures contain much more detailed information and provide interactivity which otherwise cannot be achieved in conventional brochures.  Electronic brochures are used to promote products to specific audiences.
Electronic catalogues are interactive multimedia presentations, which allow the industrial buyer to make product selections and comparisons on the computer screen.  Such catalogues are delivered through a CD-ROM disk and a multimedia PC platform equipped with a modem, which enables placement of orders to the distributor for immediate processing.

CONCLUSIONS:
By considering above features we can say that Multimedia plays a vital role in almost in every field.  It will used to make good communication between the people. But to use multimedia the person must have some high quality skills to build a perfect application.  To install the multimedia the system must have some good high quality hardware.
